Belt conveyor systems

Conveyors are durable and reliable components used in automated distribution and warehousing. In combination with computer controlled pallet handling equipment this allows for more efficient retail, wholesale, and manufacturing distribution. It is considered a labor saving system that allows large volumes to move rapidly through a process, allowing companies to ship or receive higher volumes with smaller storage space and with less labor expense.
Rubber conveyor belts are commonly used to convey items with irregular bottom surfaces, small items that would fall in between rollers (e.g. a sushi conveyor bar), or bags of product that would sag between rollers. Belt conveyors are generally fairly similar in construction consisting of a metal frame with rollers at either end of a flat metal bed. The belt is looped around each of the rollers and when one of the rollers is powered (by an electrical motor) the belting slides across the solid metal frame bed, moving the product. In heavy use applications the beds which the belting is pulled over are replaced with rollers. The rollers allow weight to be conveyed as they reduce the amount of friction generated from the heavier loading on the belting. Belt conveyors can now be manufactured with curved sections which use tapered rollers and curved belting to convey products around a corner. These conveyor systems are commonly used in postal sorting offices and airport baggage handling systems. A sandwich belt conveyor uses two conveyor belts, face-to-face, to firmly contain the item being carried, making steep incline and even vertical-lift runs achievable.
Belt conveyors are the most commonly used powered conveyors because they are the most versatile and the least expensive. Product is conveyed directly on the belt so both regular and irregular shaped objects, large or small, light and heavy, can be transported successfully. What Is a Scraper Conveyor?

A scraper conveyor is a material transportation device utilizing a continuous, driven chain circuit equipped with regularly spaced cross members. The chain travels through an channel or trough which prevents the transported materials from falling off the conveyor while the cross members drag or “scrape” them forward to the discharge point. Scraper conveyors are typically used for coarse, heavy materials such as raw coal, iron ore, cast metal parts, and metal scrap. The design is ideal for slower transportation speeds over short distances, on moderate inclines, or even in submerged applications. This type of conveyor is typically more cost effective to install and maintain than a belt conveyor of similar capacity and length.

Most industrial processes require the constant transportation of raw materials, finished items, or byproducts from one point to the other. The conveyor, in all its many guises, is probably one of the most commonly used methods of moving materials in production and manufacturing environments. The scraper conveyor is one such conveyor and sees extensive use in these industries as an efficient, low cost method of moving coarse, non-abrasive materials. These systems are ideal for moving large, heavy items or aggregates over fairly short distances, up moderate inclines, or even under water. They are relatively cheap to install and maintain and are reliable under a wide range of conditions.

A scraper conveyor has, at its heart, a continuous flexible chain or set of chains typically driven by a sprocket equipped electric motor. A single chain arrangement runs down the center of the conveyor; dual chain setups feature chains which run on either side. This chain is fitted at regular intervals with scrapers which either protrude on either side of a single chain or are supported on either end by the dual chains. These scrapers advance with the chain scraping material on the conveyor forward towards the discharge end. The chain return route may either be over the top of the conveyor or below it depending on the specific configuration.

The chain or chains run inside a partially enclosed trough or channel which forms a contained path for the transported material and prevents spillage. These conveyors may also be used in submerged configurations as is the case in ash removal systems on coal fired generators. The scraper conveyor is an ideal, low cost alternative to other conveyor systems such as belt conveyors due to its competitive cost and ease of maintenance. Scraper conveyor systems are also less prone to damage when transporting heavy, irregularly shaped items such as foundry castings and metal scrap.

Automation - Bags or Bottles, An Unbiased Evaluation

With increased competition from overseas imported fresh mushrooms, automation is the key to survival and profit. Think and evaluate before you plunge in!

Japan cultivates many mushrooms in mushroom bottles, among them are Flammulina velutipes several pleurotus strains, including P. eryngii, P. ostreatus, P. abalones, agroccybe, coprinus, Tremella, Hericium, ganoderma etc. However, Shiitake, Grifola and several other mushrooms are cultivated in bags, not bottles. In other countries including countries in North America, cultivators prefer PP and PE bags. Advantages of bag cultivation is that it is practical, and users of bags can start small and grow as the market grows. A grower can start out with very little capital expenditure. An autoclave whether large or small, like a type 941 is the only major capital equipment required. Growers will be able to tune their operation to suit the market. Virtually, any mushroom can be grown in mushroom bags including flammulina velutipes, or enoke, and with uniformity too. Apart from economics, bags can produce larger crops and tune production to suit the needs of the market, for example to delay fruiting. Bag cultivation is more flexible than other methods, which means one can vary substrate mix and mushroom strains more readily. As far as marketing in North America is concerned, any locality including all major cities that have a population of a few million are potentially good markets for specialty mushrooms. However, any areas including some parts of California, cannot compete with Japan. The mushroom consumption in any area of Japan is many times that of the US.

Per Capita consumption of specialty mushrooms in the US, Canada, Mexico and for that matter most parts of the World outside Japan are much less and therefore, marketing and production of specialty mushrooms cannot copy that in Japan. In bag cultivation bags are used once and discarded.

Major specialty mushrooms in the US and Canada are still shiitake, and pleurotus, and because of the preferred foods are different, and cooking methods are different and whatever is preferred in Japan may not be a matter of choice in North America.

Advantages of bottle cultivation are uniformity of fruiting, ease of picking, and mechanization. Disadvantages include high capital expenditure on machinery, bottles, caps and trays, limitation on size of mushrooms, inflexible substrate mix without sacrifice on bio efficiency. By choosing uniformity of fruiting, one sacrifices flexibility in production. Bottles are designed to fruit only once and cleaned out, and the size of a bottle, subsequently the amount of substrate is designed to fruit the amount of mushrooms appearing at the mouth of the bottle. Therefore if a bottle is designed for enoke, and if the same bottle is used to cultivate a different fungi, the bio-efficiency will be lower. Machines needed are quite numerous, depending on how much mechanization one wishes to achieve, and the amount of capital available. In general, apart from a ribbon mixer, the following machines are needed:

 

1. Several conveyors from machine to machine,
2. A Bottle filler, and capper which fill the prepared saw dust mix into bottles, usually 12 to 16 bottles at a time and places a filter cap on each bottle.
3. Stacker, which picks a number of trays (12 -16 bottles) and stacks them on carts for autoclaving.
4. Square autoclave and carts.
5. Cooling room with filtered air that will cool the discharged bottles,
6. Spawning machine which removes the cap, and scrapes some spawn from spawn bottles,
7. A machine automatically flame sterilizes the mouth of the spawn bottle.
8. Bottle cleaning machine, which scraps the picked bottles 16 at a time. Usually 2 or 3 such machines are used as a unit. Associated conveyors for spent substrate. These machines are fed and discharged by one machine operator.
9. Cap cleaner machine uses water to clean caps.
10. After incubation, a machine to remove caps.
11. A scrapping and pressing machine, to prepare the top of substrate to fruit uniformly,

About 234,000 bottles are needed at a cost of about 65 cents a bottle. About 500,000 caps are needed, at a cost of about 10 cents each. Bottle and caps are estimated at 3,000 bottles per hour, 2 hours a day, 3 days a week, 15 weeks per cycle, at the cost of $0.65 each:

A reasonable pay back period of this capital investment must be calculated based on whether all production of such a bottle plant can be absorbed by the locan market. Will a plant like this produce several mushroom types? And if so, at what additional cost?

Building design is geared for high bottle cultivation and machinery as well as a logical flow of processing. For this reason, a building design must take into account of the market, and is not suitable for a small farmer to grow as he modifies his rooms. In bag cultivation, initiation of fruiting can be soaking the substrate block in water. In bottle culture, initiation is by reducing temperature. This means higher energy cost. Breathable Polyethylene bags with filters, PE filted bags for sale

Breathable PE bags with filters are much used in spawn production. Because these bags are not autoclavable, sterilization is by irradiation. It is noted here that if PP is irradiated, PP disintegrates. PE filtered bags are often used by large spawn producers in sizes of 35 by 60 cms. Large spawn producers often use bulk sterilization of grain spawn. This is done by sterilizing the grain in jacketed mixers which heat and cool in fast cycles and grain introduction into the already sterilized and cooled by proprietary methods and then mixed. The mixed, and spawned substrate is filled into the PE bags and sealed to incubate. Apart from fast cycles, the finished PE bags have a smooth surface unlike PP spawn bags are often dented by protrusion of grain during autoclaving. However, the bulk sterilizing is very expensive and difficult to maintain.

Filters for these bags can be PE non-wovens like Tyvek, or other proprietary PE non wovens and membranes. PP filters can also be laminated to PE by introducing an intermediary non woven that heat sealable on PP and PE. Most PE filter bags use a large panel of filter material but instead of a large hole cut in the bag below the filter, under the large panel sealed within the panel of filter is a series of small holes. The size of the holes are very critical to allow low evaporation of humidity, and yet give the spawn fast growth. If a large hole is cut under the filter. There usually is an area below the filter that humidity is low and no colonization results, and at times, this is a considerable amount of loss to the user. The large panel of filter distributes gas exchange over a large area, and is the guarantee for fast and uniform spawn colonization.

Breathable polypropylene bags with different filter types are widely used for spawn production. In farms where spawn is produced for farm use, a stand up bag is generally used. Small bags of 10 by 8 by 30 cm gusseted with a filter 10 cm down from top are common. Larger bags with a 20 by 12 cm foot print and 50 cm high are also commonly used.

For Agaricus spawn, grain spawn, filters of the PP non woven with PP membrane are used. The filter are low gas transmission filters that retain CO2 . Unicorn type M filter and Celgard are examples of this filter. A preferred pore size is 0.2 micron.

Shiitake and pleurotus and most specialty mushrooms prefer a higher gas exchange filter.

Unicorn mushroom filter bags, and Santomi Plabag uses a PP non woven filter, and Van Leer has a similar filter as Santomi. Pore size remain at 0.2 or lower, but the efficiency of the filter (larger number of pores per unit area) allow higher gas exchange. By using PP bags and filters, substrate is autoclaved in these bags, and because these bags are of higher cost and more spawn is produced per bag, a more reliable bag must be fabricated. With PP resin, different proprietary raw material mix is used to modify PP to reduce oxidation and add to the PP resin a modifier to make the final autoclaved bag retain impact strength, or more stretch. Thus modified, bags will less likely have holes, and sealing temperature is widened.

It is also important to have a clear filter bag to observe any instance of contamination. Some bag fabricators use a special resin developed for hospital waste, this resin increases sealing temperature and reduce clarity, thus not a desirable bag for spawn production. By reducing oxidation, PP film retains its original properties and less hydro carbon gas is given off.

This method is used extensively in Asia and in environments where filtered bags are either unavailable or too costly. Usually bags of 15 to 17 cm wide and about 30 cm long with gussets, are filled with wet substrate of mixed grain and saw dust. They are typically filled about ¾ high, autoclaved at 121° for a certain length of time, and cooled. The mother culture is introduced from the top where a hole is prepared. After which a collar and cotton plug is installed and the bag is left to incubate. This done in a glove box.

The advantage of using this bag is that it is inexpensive and PP bags with no filter are easily available. However, without some custom additives, bags are usually too brittle, and when standing up, the lower four corners may easily have holes. The collar is reusable, and new cotton is used every time.
Polyethylene bags without filters are not used for spawn production.
